Formative Assessment

Formative assessment is used to determine level of understanding of subject matter, and to refocus instruction where necessary. With online learning formative assessment differs from traditional methods of conducting formative assessment, in that there are less face-to-face opportunities for interaction. In a traditional classroom setting, a teacher can watch body-language and spot check for understanding. However, in an online class, a teacher has to be more deliberate about communication by monitoring discussion boards, frequently asking for feedback, and reading blogs and journal entries.

Summative assessments will test a students knowledge typically through a formal quiz or test, in contrast to formative observation throughout the study.

Some ways you can formatively assess your students online include:

  • Use of Discussion Boards

  • Use of Journals or Blogs

  • Reflection in learning writings

  • Rubrics

  • Portfolios or Projects
