iNACOL

iNACOL is a nonprofit organization with the mission to catalyze the transformation of K-12 education policy and practice to advance powerful, personalized, learner-centered experiences through competency-based, blended and online learning.

National standards for quality courses online are outlined here.

Section A: Content Description: The course provides online learners with clearn and measurable goals and are aligned with state or national content standards.


Section B: Instructional Design Description: The course is divided into sequential units and utilizes engaging activities for all learners.

Section C: Student Assessment Description: The course incorporates ongoing feedback and uses multiple strategies and activities to assess student  progress.

Section D: Technology Description: The course provides a variety of technology tools to meets accessibility standards all learners and accommodates all school calendar schedules.

Section E: Course Evaluation and Support Description: The course is maintained with both relevant content and current technologies. Online instructors are properly accredited prepared to teach an online environment.

A. The online teacher understands effective online teaching modalities.
B. The online teacher promotes effective communication and is able to use a range of technologies.
C. The online teacher plans, designs, and incorporates strategies to encourage active learning, application, interaction, participation, and collaboration.
D. The online teacher promotes student success through clear expectations, prompt responses, and regular feedback.
E. The online teacher models good digital citizenship and encourages legal, ethical, and safe behavior related to technology use.
F. The online teacher is cognizant of the diversity of student academic needs and incorporates accommodations into the online environment. 
G. The online teacher demonstrates competencies in creating and implementing assessments in online learning environments in ways that ensure validity and reliability of the instruments and procedures.
H. The online teacher develops and delivers assessments, projects, and assignments that meet standards-based learning goals and assesses learning progress by measuring student achievement of the learning goals.
I. The online teacher demonstrates competency in using data from assessments and other data sources to modify content and to guide student learning.
J. The online teacher interacts in a professional, effective manner with colleagues, parents, and other members of the community to support students’ success.
K. The online teacher arranges media and content to help students and teachers transfer knowledge most effectively.
