LESSON OBJECTIVES

Introduction to Media Literacy

One approach to instruction design for an adult learner group requires an instructor to create a setting that promotes engagement and support that will lead the learner to obtain both professional and intellectual growth.  In an online education setting of adult learners for an introductory course in media literacy learning objectives should be designed to address cognitive knowledge. Strategies may include identifying a bias, understanding media types or exploring strengths and weaknesses of media. Activities may include reading and responding to academic articles, creating a personal blog or watching multimedia videos. Students participate in relevant peer discussions.

A performance objective tells how the lesson will be learned and how it will be assessed. It contains the activities that will be performed and how summative and formative assessments will be conducted. The objective must be observable, have measurable criteria and show what conditions the task will be completed.

This course example is designed to understand principles of media literacy and develop critical thinking skills to become more self-aware as media consumers.

OBJECTIVES

1. Learner will explore various types of media and their application.

2. Learner will evaluate strengths and weaknesses of modern media.

3. Learner will identify bias in media.

LEARNING STYLES

Introduction to Media Literacy-Online

There are different learning styles and each style must be addressed for online instruction.

  • Active Learners, or Kinesthetic learners are hands-on. They say, "let's try this and see how it works.

  • Visual Learners like to see what they are learning and adapt well to charts, graphs and diagrams.

  • Sensing learners prefer facts and typically are good at memorization. They say, "show me out this will benefit me in life."

  • Sequential learners thrive on all the details. They follow the course, one step at a time.

  • Reflective wants to think it through.

  • Verbal learners want to read about information.

  • Intuitive is the outside the box thiner who wants to figure it out.

  • Global sees the big picture and is overwhelmed with details.
